Community gathers to mark the first anniversary of the Russia-Ukrainian war

(ABC 6 News) – It’s been a little over a year since Russia began their invasion of Ukraine. In Rochester, many came together to look back and move forward.

February 24, marked the first anniversary since the war began, but due to weather conditions, community members gathered at the Mayo Civic Center Friday evening to mark the solemn occasion.

The event, The Ukraine War: 365 Days of Resistance, Remembrance, and Resolve shared songs, stories, words, and prayers to reflect and find peace.

A lot of people, see this as a milestone and a great way to strengthen the Ukrainian community despite the ongoing war.

“This event is like we’re making history, for the future to understand that we should not have wars,” said Olyah Romis.

There was also an art auction and Ukrainian goods were also available for purchase.

Many had family in Ukraine when the war was going on and hope one day the war will end.
