(ABC 6 News) – Grocery store workers got their steps in as a surge of shoppers looked to stock up on groceries before the weather gets worse.

The surge comes amid a historic holiday shopping season. It may seem a little out of left field. But chains like Sam’s Club and Hy-Vee weren’t caught off guard by the surge of customers.

One Hy-vee employee couldn’t believe how many people came out to shop.

“There’s probably been about 5 thousand people with the last two hours.” Doug Meyers, a Hy-Vee employee said.

Across town at Sam’s Club customers braved the elements to get some grocery shopping in.

GM Ryan Penticofm could tell more people than usual were shopping. But knew his team was ready to handle the challenge.

“Our home office did a really good job of making sure that we’ve been supplied the freight that we’ve need.” Penticofm said. “I know the last couple years and all the complexity of the last couple years have made it really rough.

“But our team has done a great job of being prepared to serve every customer as fast they can.”

Now that Christmas is days away, employees at both Hy-Vee and Sam’s Club believe there are still a few more rushes ahead.
