(ABC 6 NEWS) – Judge Christy Hormann has made history as the first-ever female judge to be sworn into Freeborn County.
Earlier this month, a ceremony was held for Judge Hormann to welcome her to the new role. She begins the job on April 25.
"It’s really exciting. It’s an honor to have that position. There’s a lot of talented women in the legal community, and to be the one chosen by the Governor was quite an honor," Judge Hormann said.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz appointed Judge Hormann to fill this position back in January.
She will replace Judge Steven Schwab. Minnesota’s Third Judicial District encompasses Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca, and Winona counties.
The Governor saying this about Judge Hormann…."Her work on the Third Judicial District Veteran’s Treatment Court and her dedication to helping those suffering from mental health and substance abuse issues give me confidence that she will lead with compassion and strive for equitable outcomes for all those who appear before her."
And that’s her goal.
"The future is unwritten right now, so I’m excited to jump in. My goal here is to listen with an open mind for everyone that comes before me and consider their situation when making decisions and to do my best to be fair," Judge Hormann said.
And she’s got the background for this position. She’s the former Chief Deputy Steele County Attorney, where she worked to help judicial administration flow smoothy.
Her caseload consisted of civil commitments, guardianships or conservatorships, and adult felony criminal cases.
Judge Hormann also serves on the Third Judicial District Veterans Treatment Court and the Steele County Community Corrections Advisory Board.
"It’s all pretty new still, so I’m trying to get my feet underneath me. I’m excited to get going," Judge Hormann said.
Judge Hormann is looking ahead to the future while making history at the same time.
