(ABC 6 News) – Charles City is continuing independence day celebrations, especially for the kids. The community packed its 3rd of July schedule with activities like parades and fire hose battles.

Soifer family McDonald’s and First Citizens Bank partnered to bring Kids’ Day to Central Park, encouraging families to enjoy vendors, inflatables, and other attractions.

“Lots of families come back and get together for the holiday and it’s great to just give them a space to come be a family and just enjoy each other,” said the Soifer family McDonald’s marketing supervisor Emily Garden.

The Blank Park Zoo took the stage today to introduce two guests from the animal kingdom — Milky Way the ball python and Peggy the box turtle — and took questions from the crowd.

Despite temperatures over 90 degrees, plenty of kids and their parents made it out to the park for the fun.

“My favorite part of what I did today was hanging out with my brother and my sister-in-law for the whole entire day today,” said Kayden Franzen.

The celebration will continue into the night on Monday, with a sand volleyball tournament and a hot dog eating contest. Activities are planned all day on the fourth finishing with 10 pm fireworks off of the main street bridge.
