(ABC 6 News) – A Stewartville woman was sentenced to 48 months, or 4 years in prison after causing an overdose death.

Shannon Marie Brown, 43, pleaded guilty to 2nd-degree manslaughter in the death of 45-year-old Michael Janvrin on Tuesday, March 5.

“I don’t believe the punishment fit the crime,” said Ryan Sackett, a friend of Janvrin’s for more than 40 years.

“I didn’t see any remorse from Shannon.”

Brown was originally charged with 3rd-degree murder for supplying Janvrin the fentanyl that led to his death. She ended up taking a plea deal on a 2nd-degree manslaughter charge.

“I think it’s a tragic situation. Ms. Brown was never accused of intentionally causing the death of Mr. Janvrin. This was something that was completely accidental. I do think this is a cautionary tale to anyone who takes drugs or uses drugs. You don’t always know what’s in there and that’s what happened in this case,” Jason Sanchez, an attorney representing Brown told ABC 6.

Brown received credit for 131 days spent in the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center since her arrest.

“I think the sentencing was fair in the circumstances of this case. Miss Brown came to the court with no criminal history, no prior contact with the justice system. She was very remorseful for her actions,” added Sanchez.

The pain is still there for Janvrin’s loved ones.

“I want to know why you didn’t make a call to 911 that could’ve saved Michael. That’s all,” added Sackett.

Janvrin’s daughter, Keanna, provided a victim impact statement. Reading in part:

“I have been living through a mental hell since my dad died. Ms. Brown took the life of a man who wanted to save people to prevent suffering.

“Ms. Brown is getting a deal of a lifetime. As it was the only way to get her off the streets.”

When asked if she had anything to say, Brown said just six words: “I am so sorry. So sorry.”

According to court proceedings, Brown will serve at least two-thirds of her sentence at the MN Correctional Facility in Shakopee, but could serve the remaining time on probation, if her behavior warrants early release.
