Zumbro Valley Medical Society to host foot care clinic at The Landing MN on Saturday

(ABC 6 News) – Zumbro Valley Medical Society (ZVMS) will be hosting a foot care clinic at The Landing MN on Saturday for people experiencing unstable housing.

The clinic will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at The Landing MN new Rochester location, 426 3rd Ave. NE.

Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine medical students and physicians will provide free foot soaks and specialty care. Hippy Feet, a Minneapolis-based company whose mission is to serve youth experiencing homelessness, has donated socks. Shoes will also be provided at no cost to visitors..

The ZVMS Street Medicine Initiative also includes a Street Medicine selective, or optional elective, for Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine medical students. Altogether, 26 first-year medical students are participating in the selective which helps to bring health care out of the clinical setting and to underserved populations.

Street medicine was pioneered by Dr. James Withers in Pittsburgh, PA in 1992 as a way to deliver health and social services directly to unsheltered homeless in their own environment.

ZVMS is a professional membership organization of 3,000 physicians and physicians-in-training in Olmsted, Dodge, Fillmore, and Houston Counties.
