(ABC 6 News) – The Rochester branch of the NAACP and the Rochester Civic theatre will hold a vigil to honor the life of Tyre Nichols.

We spoke with Walé Elegbede, President of the NAACP in Rochester, about why it’s important for our communities to honor Tyre’s life despite the incident not happening in near us.

“We need to stop thinking about oh wait a minute it can’t happen here, and are we doing the best that we can. A traffic stop should not mean a death sentence and a badge should not be a shield to accountability,” NAACP Rochester President Walé Elegbede explained.

The indoor vigil will be held Sunday February 5 at 5 p.m. at the the Rochester Civic theatre.

Nichols will be remembered for being a father, avid skateboarder and nature photographer.
