Vehicle hits Amish buggy in Floyd County injuring 6

(ABC 6 News) – A vehicle struck an Amish buggy in rural Floyd County on Tuesday afternoon injuring several people.

The Iowa State Patrol (ISP) says the accident happened around 3:30 p.m. near 3160 140th St. in Colwell, approximately 10 miles northeast of Charles City.

A Chevy truck driven by 66-year-old Jim Whitmarsh, of Charles City, was traveling eastbound on 140th St. when it struck an Amish buggy from the rear causing all occupants in the buggy to be ejected.

The operator of the buggy, 32-year-old Lavern Stauffer along with 27-year-old Teresa Stauffer, and four children ages 6, 4, 2 and under 1 were all taken to Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City. The extent of their injuries are unknown.

The ISP says the accident remains under investigation.

The ISP was assisted at the scene by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Colwell Fire Department, Floyd Fire, AMR, and Chickasaw EMS.
