MnDOT prescribed burn planned Thursday along Hwy 52 in Fillmore County

(ABC 6 News) – The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) announced that motorists on Hwy 52 east of Harmony may see smoke on Thursday.

Crews will be conducting a prescribed burn which the MnDOT says is necessary for preventing weed infestations, controlling erosion, protecting water quality and keeping roadways safe.

Many types of plants need fire for ideal growth including tall native grasses that can trap blowing snow and reduce drifting across roads.

The MnDOT says motorists on Hwy 52 between Harmony and Canton in Fillmore County will see warning signs as they approach the burn areas and should be attentive and watch for the burn crews who will be monitoring the fires.

If weather conditions are good, the MnDOT says future prescribed burns will be planned this season throughout southeast Minnesota.
