Mason City man sentenced in 2021 death of bicyclist

(ABC 6 News) – A Mason City man charged in the death of a bicyclist has been sentenced.

Cody Skiye, 29 of Mason City, was sentenced Monday to five years in prison and ordered to pay $1,025 in fines after entering an Alford plea to serious injury by vehicle while intoxicated.

In June 2021, police said Skyie hit 62-year-old James Powell around 11:30 p.m. in the 22000 block of Thrush Ave. Powell died from his injuries six days later.

Court documents state Skiye had a blood alcohol content of .222, over twice the legal limit, when he was driving.

Skiye pleaded not guilty in July 2021 to homicide by vehicle while operating under the influence, as well as counts of making a false report to law enforcement, no insurance, and operating a motor vehicle too closely to a bicycle.
