(ABC 6 News) – The holidays are a time where many love to volunteer to spread joy in their community, but some organizations still need new volunteers this year.

And if you’re interested in making a difference by volunteering, it could be as easy as ringing a bell.

The Salvation Army Rochester is always accepting volunteers to participate in its annual red kettle campaign.

It’s hard to imagine shopping during the holidays without hearing the iconic sound of the salvation army red kettle bell.

“It’s really one of the special things we do, we get the chance to be out there and help bring that spirit of Christmas,” says volunteer Bill Kleis.

However, some kettles stand in silence, and it makes all the difference.

“If you see an empty kettle stand, we’re lucky to get maybe $5 an hour. But when volunteers go out, we average about $100 an hour so that really helps us at the salvation army,” says Major Cornell Voeller, Corps Officer at The Salvation Army.

Volunteering to ring is a fun way to give back, and for many, it’s a holiday tradition.

“My favorite part is when my daughter wants to come with me, or my granddaughter once in a while, and so it becomes kind of a family thing,” says Kleis. “That makes it good for the people walking by, you can see the spirits being lifted, and that’s really what we’re trying to do.”
