(ABC 6 News) – Many of us are celebrating our Valentine’s Wednesday, and the Oronoco Fire Department helped some do just that.

The Oronoco Fire Department spent the day passing out Valentine-Gram’s across southeast Minnesota. A sweet message delivered in a sweet way thanks to a co-worker’s idea.

Firefighters traveled around the area spreading the holiday love, thanks to a little help from your loved ones.

“We said, ‘Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.’ Everybody wants a Valentine on Valentine’s Day. So, what more fun than having a firetruck with firefighters show up and give you a Valentine?” said Johann Sonnenberg, a training officer with the Oronoco Fire Department.

About 40 people signed up for grams.

The firefighters surprised one woman early Wednesday morning at work with a gram her boyfriend sent her.

Another was at work in Byron when a friend, also a member of OFD, stopped by with a gram to make her holiday a little brighter.

The event was also a fundraiser for the fire department. They suggested a donation of $20 for each gram. Everyone gave that and sometimes more, helping make sure firefighters, now and in the future, have the tools they need.

“We’re a volunteer department. Which basically means, if the pager goes off, we go when we can. But we don’t stay at the station. We’re dropping our lives to go help someone out,” said Dani White, a firefighter with OFD.

Based on the community response, the department hopes to bring the grams back bigger and better next year.
