(ABC 6 News) – An education bill requiring literacy tests for teachers moves forward after passing an Iowa subcommittee on Tuesday.

Under the bill, teachers would have to pass a literacy test to teach kindergarten through sixth grade by 2027.

Supporters say the bill will make sure teachers are properly trained to teach students.

Critics say the bill could hurt teacher retention, at a time when Iowa schools are already seeing a teacher shortage.
