Clear Lake Fire Department hosts push-in event

The city of Clear Lake, IA welcomed a new addition to the fire department today in an age old ceremony called, a push-in.

(ABC 6 News) – The city of Clear Lake, IA welcomed a new addition to the fire department Saturday in an age old ceremony, called a push-in.

The ceremony dates back to the 1800’s, where firefighters would push horse-drawn fire engines into the station, as a way to commission the apparatus.

Residents of Clear Lake and the surrounding areas came together to help celebrate this joyous moment.

“It’s our community’s fire truck, so it’s important that we invite them to these sort of things, have them help us push it in to show we appreciate their support and we can’t do this without their support,” said Capt. Tom Hartwig, Clear Lake Fire Captain. “Because it allows us to have the nice equipment that works for us, that keeps us safe, and that keeps [the community] protected too.”

The ceremony today was the first time this has been done in Clear Lake.
