(ABC 6 News) – Locally, the price of land has skyrocketed because of the growth of Rochester and neighboring cities.

Two Rivers Habitat for Humanity has purchased five lots of land in Rochester. The normal cost for a lot with proper sewage, water, and gas starts around $75,000. Habitat will get each lot at a discounted rate of $50,000.

The organization is currently going through the family selection process for that land. Staff say they are very grateful they are able to buy these five lots to bring more affordable housing to the community.

"Now with the acquisition of these five lots, we can now build more homes here in Rochester," said Ken Quattrin, marketing and communications with Two Rivers Habitat for Humanity. "Families in the current climate are struggling financially. People are living on fixed incomes, inflation has gone through the roof. Now that we have these five lots, we can help families that are struggling."

The family selection process takes several months. About 50 applications have come in so far.
