(ABC 6 News) – As part of "Welcome Week" students at Austin Public schools got a chance to listen to some multicultural stories.
Students at Woodson Kindergarten Center heard stories from a number of diverse volunteer readers. The school district is home to more than a dozen different ethnic cultures and races.
Some of the books read include Hair Love, as well as Our Skin: A first conversation about race.
"I think that this is the most vital part of their lives where they can learn that they are important and that they are seen in the community, Jwokamer Debock, Digital Navigator, Austin Aspires said.
"We are all human beings and when we see things that way, we can easily get together and build this community together," said Welcome Center Director Herve Idjidina.
Volunteers say the event was a privilege to come together and read to students and celebrate diversity especially during welcome week.
