(ABC 6 News) – People across the country are honoring American Prisoners of War and service members who are Missing in Action. The annual recognition takes place on the third Friday of every September.

A group from the Minnesota POW/MIA Riders Association held a candlelight vigil at the Soldiers Field Memorial Friday evening.

This year also marked the 50th anniversary of the POW-MIA flag, pioneered by the late Mary Ellen Hoff who was inspired when her husband went missing in action after his plane crashed over Laos in 1970.
