(ABC 6 News) – As Fire Prevention Week wraps .up, Albert Lea is finally able to showcase its brand new fire station.

The Albert Lea Fire Department opened the station last year, but because of COVID restrictions, this is the first time the public is invited inside.

The new location has some upgrades. There’s a sauna to help remove toxins and a fitness center to stay healthy. This facility is twice the size of the old one.

"Getting the public in here is the greatest thing, we have been wanting to do this for over a year. COVID shut things down for us as soon as we moved in. It’s great that it falls in line with fire prevention week, with our open house. So we can have our open house fire prevention tours and then get people through the facility to check it out," Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Laskowske of the Albert Lea Fire Dept. said.

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the station has activites for the kids, including a bounce house and a fire simulator so kids can practice getting out in case of an emergency.

Public tours will be available Sunday between 10 am and 2 pm.
