Local Softball Highlights for Friday 5/20

(ABC 6 News) — No better way to kick off the weekend than with softball on a Friday.

Multiple southeast Minnesota high school softball teams were out today, including Lanesboro/Fillmore Central hosting a doubleheader versus Caledonia/Spring Grove. The visiting Warriors were dominant through the fifth inning, establishing a 5-0 lead. L/FC’s Klaudia Biel and Lonnie Irish tried to close the gap, but even with two Falcons on base, C/SG held strong. Warriors pitcher Braelyn Lange overcame her own wild pitch to tag out Hailey O’Connor at home plate, ending the inning. The Warriors would sweep the doubleheader winning 5-0 and 12-2 over the Falcons.

Meanwhile, the Dover-Eyota Eagles had the opportunity to upset one of the top Class 1AA teams in Minnesota, the Chatfield Gophers, at home. The Gophers found scoring to be tougher than expected, Chatfield’s Payton Berg got her team’s first off a single, but was thrown out trying to steal second later. Despite, great defense from the Eagles, an error proved to be costly as Dover-Eyota’s Karlen Kimery couldn’t catch the ball on a toss to first base. This allowed Chatfield’s Sydney Allen to reach safely and teammate Josie Koenigs to score. Chatfield would eventually win 2-1 over the Eagles.

Over in Rochester, the latest "Queen of the City" match featured John Marshall visiting Mayo for a crosstown bout. The Spartans of Mayo scored first after Rockets pitcher Jenna Boisen threw a wild pitch, paving the way for Mayo’s Tiegan Mancuso to score. Hailey Lamers added on to the lead with an RBI single to send home Raven Heise. The Spartans ultimately prevailed 10-0 on Senior Night, punctuated by a feel-good moment from Avery Wernerberg. The senior ended up hitting her first career home run with Mayo during the rout as the Spartans will now prepare for the postseason.
