(ABC 6 News) — Sunday night, the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2001. But one player on that crew has his roots all the way back to Southeast Minnesota.

Nico Sturm, once an Austin Bruin and former Minnesota Wild player, was traded to Colorado earlier this season. Now he’ll forever be a Stanley Cup champion alongside the Avs after playing in 21 games for Colorado. Sturm helped set up a game-tying goal for Andrew Cogliano during Game 4, which eventually resulted in an Avs win.

As an Austin Bruin, Sturm scored 11 career goals while scoring 20 overall with Minnesota the past two seasons before being shipped to Colorado.
