(ABC 6 News) – Byron Public Schools at this time is only recommending students and staff wear masks when they return this fall.

Byron Superintendent Mike Neubeck says he is recommending that the school board only recommend masks — not mandate them.

But one Byron parent who also is a healthcare professional says she wants the district to make masking a mandate.

"Our little kids, they don’t have access to vaccines they’re not eligible for vaccines. We can’t protect them, what we’re asking for is just for them to follow the science," Byron school parent Nikki Sohanaki said.

Nikki has a second-grader at Byron Public Schools, her child can’t get the vaccine yet.

The school board is expected to decide on Monday.
