(ABC 6 News) – Birdsall’s Ice Cream will receive $30,000 as part of a downtown revitalization loan.

Mason City City Council unanimously voted to approve the loan on Tuesday night. One of the longest-running businesses in town, the funding will be used to make the restroom ADA complaint, repair the freezer area, and to update the kitchen.

"We’re a small business so $30,000 is a lot of money. So it just allows us to do more quicker, and get the money back," said Gary Schmit, one of the owners and operators of Birdsall’s. "It’s an opportunity for us to make a nicer facility, really for our customers."

Schmit noted that the store hasn’t been updated since the 1960s.
