(ABC 6 News) – St. Paul saw a rally in support of a bill that aims to help people struggling with medical debt.

The Minnesota Debt Fairness Act would establish provisions to make the debt more manageable by reducing interest rates, ban medical debt being reported to credit bureaus and repeal the law that automatically transfers medical debt to a patient’s spouse.

Organizations and lawmakers gather at the state capitol, asking legislators to pass the bill.

“We are not going to stop. This is not the end of anything, it is the beginning of something and that is a movement toward economic and social justice,” said Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.

The Minnesota Debt Fairness Act is part of the commerce policy omnibus bill, which had a hearing in the Minnesota House on Monday, April 15.
