(ABC 6 News) – At the Minnesota Capitol, telecom groups are raising concerns about possible new taxes on internet providers that could raise prices for customers.

HF 4182 would allow local governments to charge internet providers right-of-way fees for laying cables on city property.

Telecom groups say it could lead to a service tax that would be tacked onto the bills of customers.

Supporters say this taxation model has been used for cable companies for years and has already worked well.

Not that many people have shifted to streaming, lawmakers say it internet companies should face the same taxes.
