Prep of the Week: Hattie Mathre

The day's local, regional and national news, detailed events and late-breaking stories are presented by the ABC 6 News Team, along with the latest sports, weather updates including the extended forecast.

(ABC 6 News) — Hattie Mathre has wrestling woven into her daily life from her admiration for Sasha Banks to her winning ways on the mat.

“I’ve only been doing it for three years and obviously I’m seeing success,” Mathre discussed. “But there’s many other people showing success and if the girls start as young as they are, obviously in our program they can really succeed.”

With a 24-9 record this year, she’s practically a freshman in name only. Mathre grapples like an upperclassman, continuing to set the bar for a still-young Byron Girls Wrestling crew.

“She’d let the person go, get a takedown, let the lady go,” head coach Ryan Radke detailed. “And try to get a few of those before we start getting into the top position which she’s very tough at.”

As soon as a match is over, Mathre is already evaluating herself. She loves her wins but sees the occasional loss as much a teacher as her coaches, constantly going over fundamentals.

“My big match which was against Diann Smith from GMLOS,” Mathre recounted. “In all honesty, I’m a bit grateful that I lost because I was able to see what I could’ve improved on.”

“If we’re hanging out she always teaches me techniques,” senior teammate Brooke Wendorff added. “Takedowns like the hand placement of just making sure the grip is right, down to the very last detail. She will drill it a million times until it’s perfect.”

Mathre’s key to success has been embracing its antithesis: Failure.

It’s made her acutely aware of her skillset, sharpening her mind and her athleticism. Don’t be surprised if she becomes a mainstay at State. She isn’t planning on going anywhere for a long time.

“Get 50 wins and eventually, hopefully, get 100 wins at the end of my career,” Mathre said of her goals. “That would just be an amazing thing. I would like to see the numbers grow immensely, I mean it’s not those big goals, it’s also the community goals that’s really important too.”
