(ABC 6 News) – The City of Rochester and Olmsted County Emergency Management Offices have announced a new Emergency Notification System called CodeRed.

There are two types of alerts that can be sent through the system.

The first are emergency alerts, sent by Emergency Management officials through the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS).

These alerts notify community members of life-threatening situations.

The alert will explain what’s happening, any specific instructions that should be followed and the anticipated time frame of the incident.

There is no need to sign up for CodeRed to receive emergency alerts, but doing so will ensure residents are notified of events in a timely manner.

The other type of alert will be urgent alerts, which refer to non-life threatening emergencies, sent by Emergency Management or other City officials.

These alerts will deliver information residents should be aware of that may require the recipient to take action, such as snow emergency alerts, water main breaks or short-term, major traffic interruptions.
