(ABC 6 News) – We are learning more about the future of North Iowa. On Thursday, Jan. 18, the Mason City Chamber of Commerce held its annual “State of North Iowa” address to talk about the progress on last year’s projects and to introduce new ones.

The main focus of this year’s address is housing and population growth, recreational projects, and child care.

Child Care Works is a new, $1 million childcare wage supplement program. Child care providers will be able to apply for a grant and if they get it, will be cut a check to help subsidize their wages. Also part of the plan is a state income tax exemption.

“We are seeing the child care business start to crumble a little bit in the essence of, they absolutely need our help. Our economy is in this state right now. We’re really doing some wonderful things in Iowa but I think there’s more that we can do,” said Sheri Penney, the Employment Engagement Director with the Iowa Women’s Foundation.

Another focus for 2024, bringing more people to the area with an $80 million investment to add housing while continuing to attract new workers.

“At the end of the day, it’s really about, we are in the people business, right? If our policies are not creating opportunities where Iowans can thrive and raise the standard of living, then we need to change those policies. And that’s how we approach growth,” said Debi Durham, Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA.)

There is also a plan for more fun. Destination Iowa is providing nearly $4.5 million to enhance the Clear Lake Surf District, and another $4 million plus for a bike park. That’s in addition to the High Line Trail that opened last year.

The Mason City Municipal Airport Terminal Project is set to finish this July.
