(ABC 6 News) – A new Iowa library bill passed out of subcommittee on Tuesday, planning on giving city councils across Iowa oversight of their city’s public library.

It would allow city councils to oversee the hiring of new library directors, while also allowing them to use a library’s tax money by ordinance without a referendum.

Supporters say the bill would give voters more oversight of their local library, but opponents say the bill would put libraries at risk of lost funding.

The bill will now be considered by the full committee before heading to the senate floor for a vote.
