(ABC 6 News) – “We as women should not have to share our safe spaces with a man. Period. Ever.”

The words spoken by one supporter on Monday regarding the Iowa Gender bill, which would define words like “man,” “woman” and “sex.”

Both protesters and supporters of the bill visited the Iowa state House to make their voices heard.

Critics of the bill say it would negatively impact the lives of transgender people, as it would require people who received gender-affirming surgery to put both male and female sex markers on their birth certificates and driver’s licenses.

“As someone who would be erased and endangered by this bill, I must ask you to vote against it,” said Shea Daniels, a critic of the bill.

“There is a distinct difference that everybody in this room knows between boys and girls. It’s the universal understanding of that uniqueness,” said Josh Briggs, a supporter of the bill.

Supporters say the bill helps to protect “biological women.”

Governor Kim Reynolds previously said, “women and men are not identical. They possess unique biological differences. That’s not controversial, it’s common sense.”

The bill recently passed in committee, and is now eligible for a full vote on the House floor.
