Emmer Drops Out as Speaker Hopeful

(ABC News) – House Majority Whip Tom Emmer ended his speaker bid just hours after he received his party’s nomination Tuesday.

Emmer got the nomination after five rounds of secret ballots Tuesday, but was still lacking GOP support to win on the House floor. Two candidates who earlier Tuesday were in the running for the nomination are now back in: Reps. Mike Johnson and Kevin Hern.

Another candidate forum is expected Tuesday evening.

The chaotic battle for the gavel has dragged on after House Majority Leader Steve Scalise was nominated, but backed out when it became clear he didn’t have the votes. Last week, the conference dropped Rep. Jim Jordan as their nominee after his speakership bid failed for a third time on the House floor. Emmer was the third nominee in as many weeks.
