(ABC 6 News) – On Wednesday, a Winnebago County resident contacted the county recorder’s officer about a suspicious postcard they received. The postcard claimed it was from “County Deed Records/Home Warranty Division,” warning of an expiring warranty that could leave the resident’s home unprotected.

According to the county’s office, the postcard advised the resident “to contact our offices so you do not have a lapse in coverage for all available covered components.”

The postcard claimed that all repairs to the resident’s home would be covered, warning against possibly expensive repairs and product replacements in their home.

However, the Iowa County Recorders Association confirmed the information given to be illegitimate.

County recorders take responsibility for maintenance and management of official property and real estate documents in Iowa.

Winnebago County advises all residents who receive a similar postcard to not respond in any fashion. The county recommends not paying, calling, visiting the website listed or returning any mail requests related to the fraudulent postcard.

Winnebago County Recorder Shanna Eastvold said in a Facebook post, “Thankfully the individual, in this case, came to our office to ask questions before taking action. This postcard was NOT sent by County Recorders. Fraudulent activity is getting smarter.”
