(ABC 6 News) — The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is canceling the Color the Wind Kite Festival that was scheduled for February 17.

According to a press release sent out by the organization, the event drew nearly 20,000 people to Clear Lake last year. The festival showcases large inflatable kites flown by people from all over the country.

Last year, the event brought in around $1.6 million into the city.

“This event definitely has a large economic impact at a time that’s really critical for our business community. The number of people who come and shop and eat at our restaurants and stay at our hotels, it’s a welcome economic boost for sure. So we’re really disappointed to have to cancel it because of those reasons,” said president and CEO Stacy Doughan, Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

This is the third time in it’s 23-year history that the event has been canceled due to deteriorating ice conditions.

The event was last cancelled in 2013 and 2017.

Next year’s festival has been set for February 15.
