Chinese company affiliated with Mayo Clinic named as national security threat in new bill

A proposed U.S. congressional bill classifies a Chinese biotech company with ties to Mayo Clinic as a national security threat.

(ABC 6 News) – A proposed U.S. congressional bill classifies a Chinese biotech company with ties to Mayo Clinic as a national security threat.

The U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Community Party introduced the BIOSECURE Act January 25.

If passed, this bill would restrict federally funded medical providers from using foreign adversary biotech companies.

One of the companies named in the BIOSECURE Act is Wuxi Apptec Group, which has partnered with Mayo Clinic since 2018 to deliver clinical diagnostic services in China.

In response to the proposed legislation, Mayo Clinic provided the following statement:

“Mayo Clinic Laboratories and WuXi AppTec Group formed a joint venture in 2018 to accelerate the development of esoteric tests with the intent to benefit patients in China called WuXi Diagnostics. We are studying the bill language and will comply with federal requirements, if passed, that apply to our clinical and business activities.”
