Passers-by told the first responders that when they saw the accident, the motorcycle was smoking and on top of the passenger, 37-year-old Cassandra Carter of Millville.

The passers-by used water bottles to extinguish the motorcycle and lifted it off Carter, who was transported by Mayo Clinic Ambulance to receive burn and injury treatment.

She was later taken to Regions Hospital for her burns, and remains in critical care.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Lt. Lee Rossman with the OCSO said the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

According to the scene, he added, the motorcycle may have skidded and crossed the westbound lane of 75th Street NW, and the riders may have laid the motorcycle down and/or struck a sign as they went into the northern ditch.
