Matthew Hurt’s father speaks on his son’s NBA debut

Richard Hurt discusses the debut of his son, Matthew, during Monday night's game for the Memphis Grizzlies.

(ABC 6 News) — Memphis Grizzlies fans got a taste of what Southeast Minnesota has known for a long time: Matthew Hurt is a baller. He made his NBA debut on Monday, scoring 10 points for Memphis.

The former John Marshall Rocket playing well, despite the Grizzlies losing to Sacramento. One man who couldn’t be prouder is Matthew’s father, Richard, an assistant for Rockets boys hoops.

“He’s leading the G-League in scoring right now even though he got called up to the Grizzlies,” Richard said. “It is a 10-day contract, but you know, something that, hopefully, is an audition for something much more. We saw a little glimpse of that, he hit his first two three’s in the game, he had 10 points, 2 rebounds and played very well overall.”

Hurt’s debut also continues a long line of former Mr. Minnesota basketball winners reaching the NBA including Jalen Suggs and Chet Holmgren, both active players.

“Minnesota basketball is vastly underrated nationwide whether it’s on the girls or the boys level,” Richard continued. “There are several that are in the NBA and obviously, we want Matthew to stick there like some of the guys you mentioned. Tre and Tyus Jones, Amir Coffey, (Suggs and Holmgren), all those guys. We definitely want him to stick the same way.”

Hopefully, that won’t be Matthew’s only time in the lineup this season as Memphis hosts Cleveland on Thursday at 7 PM.
