(ABC 6 News) -The city of Albert Lea partnered with Freeborn County this month to raise awareness of domestic violence.

In conjunction with the county, Albert Lea mayor Rich Murray also declared October domestic violence awareness month during a city council meeting earlier this month. Since then, city and county buildings have been lit up purple every night.

They also painted the town purple to let people know about the Freeborn County crime victims crisis center in case an emergency does come up.

“It does an amazing job helping victims of all kinds of domestic violence. Everything that you typically think of as abuse to identity theft, to harassment, stalking. So any kind of violence that can touch people’s lives. We have a crisis center available 24/7 to help people,” said Cathy Malakowsky, Albert lea Engagement and Enrichment Director.

Paint The Town Purple will continue through the end of the month and there is a 24 hour crisis line that you can call in case of any emergency at 1-877-399-3040.
