Peer To Peer Help with Addiction

November 03, 2017 07:18 PM

(ABC 6 News) - More than 11,000 people used the services at Recovery is Happening in Rochester last year, and the number is expected to grow.

Tomorrow night, the group is holding its biggest fundraiser of the year.

Next week, it plans on unveiling a new program which utilizes recovering addicts.

“I have been struggling with a meth addiction off and on probably for about 17 years.”

She started as a client. Now, Nichol Broitzman is a volunteer at Recovery is Happening.

She says if it weren’t for the services provided by the non-profit ...”I would probably still be out on the streets using.”

The organization [Recovery is Happening] says the opioid epidemic is growing. As a result, addiction services are becoming more crucial. “It's not just about people suffering from the illness, it's now about people dying immediately because of their use,” says the Founder & Executive Director, Tiffany Hunsley.

That's why Recovery is Happening is expanding its outreach. Thanks to a new grant from the State, it's launching the "Peer- to - Peer" program.

The program uses recovering addicts to reach out to those currently struggling with addiction.

Next week, they will begin visiting places like the Salvation Army, looking to bridge the gap between people and services. “To know that someone else out there is - and has been - going through what you have been going through and can do something more with their life, it just provides hope,” says Peer Recovery Specialist, Cassie Pappas.

While the grant is good for 2 years, they're hoping that ...“By July of 2018, Peer Recovery Specialists will be reimbursable through insurance,” says Hunsley.

“Addiction, substance use disorder is such a lonely thing,” says Peer Program Coordinator, Nicki de Vera.

But through programs like this, it doesn't have to be.

On her path to recovery, there is one thing Nichol Boitzman has come to know. She is so much more than her addiction. “I'm a mother. I am a friend. People count on me.”

Her biggest message to those going through the same thing is there is a place to go and people who understand, ready to listen.
