(ABC 6 News) - Throughout these last two weeks of practice, the Triton Cobras have been, "trying to establish the difference between great effort and good enough," head coach Mike Ellingson said.
Less than a week to go, the Cobras are getting ready to kick off their 2019 campaign and this year they are playing to a new motto: win as one, which was chosen by the senior class.
Coach Ellingson is proud of what the seniors have done for this team and how they are leading.
"They've really been trying to emphasize that gel, that moxie that makes good teams better," Ellingson added.
However, the seniors aren't the only ones stepping up. The team has new leadership under center.
Junior quarterback Mason Barker is entering his first year as starting QB. Last season, he got some reps after the team's starter went down with an injury, but now it's showtime for the Barker, who seems to be quite versatile.
"He's just got quiet leadership ability," Ellingson shared. "He's a wrestler, he's a tough kid. He also plays middle linebacker which is usual for a quarterback as well. So, he just has an innate ability to make people follow him."
Barker is stepping into a big role, but says he has more confidence than he did last year.
"I feel more comfortable. I'm ready."
After going 2-8 last season, the Cobras are looking to turn things around by entering this year with a fresh outlook.
"We have the mentality that we're going to win every game," senior Aydan Round said. "It may not happen, but it's good to have a positive attitude heading into each game."
The Triton Cobras get things going on Friday against the Stewartville Tigers. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. in Stewartville.
