(ABC 6 News) - This racing season has been special for the Brauer family. They bond over the sport they love while competing with and against one another.

This year is full of firsts for the family. Brothers Kolton (13) and Braden (16) are racing against one another for the first time ever. Braden also finally has the opportunity to race against his dad Jeff in super stocks.

"There is a little more on your mind like 'oh gosh this is my dad or this is Kolton.' You know, cause you're going to hear it from them after the races maybe," Braden said.

While Braden and Kolton were behind the wheel of a car long before turning 16, Jeff didn't drive in his first race until his late 20s. But after getting immersed in the sport thanks to his brother-in-law, he was hooked.

But if you would've told him a decade ago that he would still be racing in 2020, he wouldn't have believed you.

"We had kids and they're too young to race and then things were really busy cause you got kids and a business and I'm trying to race. I just always thought that I'd give it up. Next thing I know Braden is six and I'm buying a slingshot and it just kind of evolved into what it is now," Jeff said.

Watching their dad rack up wins and watching him work on the cars was enough to intrigue Braden and Kolton.

"Watching my dad growing up really, really got me into it. I was really excited to first get into the car," Braden said. "I really look up to my dad. Looking at all the trophies in here just amazes me just how many feature wins he's had and everything, and really inspires me to do good in racing too."

They share a passion for the sport, but the three also share a track with each other at times. Kolton is driving street stocks for the first time, and is showing promise at just 13.

"I've gotten pretty confident about going out on the track and racing people three times my age," Kolton said.

The goal on the track is always to cross the finish line first. But Jeff sees the bigger picture: sharing a passion with his sons.

"Braden would have a really good night and I'd still have to race yet, and honestly I wouldn't even really care how I did because I was just so excited he did so well. It'd make the night. It's just a whole different deal when you've got your kids racing because you put a lot of time into that and you want them to do really well and when they do, it's literally more rewarding than you doing well yourself," Jeff said.

Some families spend their time at the lake in the summer, relaxing in the sun. The Brauer's choose to spend their time working on their cars and racing together, and they'd have it no other way.

"I would think about what we would do if I wasn't doing this, as a family and what I would do and all that. When it got right down to it, it's just what we do," Jeff said.

Despite the season being shortened due to COVID-19, it has been a successful summer for the family. Braden has won two features in the last two weeks.
