(ABC 6 News) – It’s been quite a school year for Spring Grove athletics—and the party hasn’t stopped in March.

The Lions defeated the Randolph Rockets in Friday’s Section 1A boys’ basketball championship game, 72-54, clinching their first trip to the Class A state tournament in program history.

"These guys just have a lot of moxie,” Lions head coach Wade Grinde said. “When they dig in to play, they're a tough out."

The Lions were led in scoring by seniors Alex Folz (33 points) and Ethan Matzke (15 points). Folz, a 2018 Minnesota Mr. Football Finalist, and Matzke were integral parts of the Lions two Class 9-Man state football championship winning teams in 2017 and 2018.

"It's an honor to bring this for the town. They deserve it,” Folz said. “The fans were amazing tonight, thank you to them. Thank you to everyone supporting us, thank you to the teammates who made the senior year a magical season, and most of all, thank you to the coaches who put in the time to help us get here."

Spring Grove will await their state tournament fate. The Class A state tournament is scheduled to open on Thursday in Minneapolis.
