(ABC 6 News) - The high school football season is less than a week away and the John Marshall Rockets are gearing up for their season opener on Thursday.
"This team, I feel, is ready to win," senior Will Woodford said. "We haven't had the best past couple of years and this team is just ready to win. They're itching to win."
JM finished last season with a 2-7 record, which has been a motivator to turn things around.
As head coach Kevin Kirkeby said, the team is looking to compete at everything this season. Like most programs, the Rockets are rebuilding after losing some key players on the line, in skill positions, such as running backs and their quarterback.
However, Coach Kirkeby said the incoming senior class has taken on that leadership role.
Now, the Rockets prepare for their season opener against Mankato West in six days and they have a good idea of what they need to do to be successful this season.
"The overall message was we have to get fast, we have to get stronger," Kirkeby said. "We also said we have to catch the ball better and we have to throw the ball better. So at captain's practice, they've been working on it really well because we're coming in and doing quite a nice job with that."
The Rockets are looking to sharpen up some thing on offense, while also relying on their size on both sides of the ball.
"We're going to have to make sure we keep our passing game in check, that's one of our weaknesses, but our strengths are definitely going to be our offensive line and defensive line," senior Braden Black said about how his team can succeed on both sides of the ball. "Big boys up there will help us run hard and stop the ball."
John Marshall faces Mankato West on Thursday in Mankato. Kick-off set for 7 p.m.
