(ABC 6 News) – In Rochester, residents can’t help but root for one of their own—even if they’re exchanging the purple and gold jerseys for black and gold.

Long-time Minnesota Vikings cornerback and punt returner Marcus Sherels has signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, the Saints confirmed on Monday.

Sherels has been the ultimate underdog story—a former standout athlete at Rochester John Marshall high school, Sherels was a walk-on at the University of Minnesota before earning a scholarship and starting at cornerback for the Gophers.

After finishing his college football career in 2009, Sherels was a longshot to make it to the NFL, but he worked his way onto the home-state Minnesota Vikings practice squad. Sherels made the 53-man roster as the Vikings no.1 punt returner in 2011, and the rest is history.

In his nine-year Vikings’ career (2010-2018), Sherels is the franchise’s all-time leading punt returner in yardage (2,447 yards) and touchdowns (5).

This past season, the Saints finished one win short of reaching the Super Bowl.
