(ABC 6 News) - It appears the Rochester Honkers baseball team will be under new ownership for the 2019 season and beyond. For the first time in more than a decade and a half, the Rochester Honkers, the Med City’s Northwoods League summer baseball team for more than 25 years, will have new ownership.
The Rochester Board of Park Commissioners unanimously approved the transfer of the lease for Mayo Field to the new ownership group, Bases Loaded Entertainment, LLC. The group is located out of La Crosse, Wisconsin, and they own the La Crosse Loggers and the Mankato MoonDogs. The MoonDogs and Loggers are both members of the Northwoods League, same as the Honkers.
The sale of the team is expected to be finalized sometime this week.
According to the Park Board agenda, "no changes in revenue or expenses are expected from the Honkers Ownership transition."
The current Honkers co-owners are Dan Litzinger and Kim Archer. Litzinger has been involved with the Honkers since their inaugural season in 1994 before becoming the organization’s General Manager in 1997. Litzinger and co-owner Kim Archer teamed up to become the owners of the franchise in 2003. With the sale, it assures that the Honkers aren't going anywhere any time soon.
"This is where the Northwoods League was born essentially, was right here (in Rochester)," Bases Loaded Entertainment President Chris Goodell said. "We're just looking for bigger and better things and getting engaged here in the community."
"They do a really great job in La Crosse," Litzinger added. "That's one of the reasons we went with these guys, knowing that the transition is easy and they'll keep the momentum going for the Rochester Honkers for the next 25 years."
Officials from the Northwoods League did not return a phone call today.
