(ABC 6 News)- On Saturday, the Rochester Mayo Spartans bowling team won their first ever state championship title over Superior (Wisconsin) in two games, 202-159, and 192-158 respectively.
“In Rochester, there have only been three times where a Rochester school has been a state champion,” Spartans Head Coach, Marlys Ohnstad said.
The Rochester Mayo Spartans bowling team was not one of those teams heading into the 2018 season. The last time the Spartans bowling team got close to a state title was back in 2016.
“Two years ago we were number 7 (seed) and we beat everybody and went to state, but that time we only made it to the second round and then we were out,” Ohnstad said. “There is a lot of mind games (in sports), you got to get your mind set right, mental is a lot in sports.”
This year though, the Spartans had the right mentality.
“The biggest thing is (to) forget about the bad shots, if you just forget about that and go into the next shot and its good you just keep that going and you can beat anybody with that kind of mentality,” Spartans Senior Co-Captain Mike Bigalk said.
The Spartans held first place in the Southeast Minnesota West conference, heading into the playoffs with a 10-4-2 record.
“I think we had potential all season long,” Junior Co-Captain Aziza Moore said. “We were winning all of our matches, with how much we were winning and staying on top of our conference, I think that kind of showed we were state bound.”
After winning all nine games in the conference playoffs, the Spartans reached round three of the state finals, facing Superior for the Minnesota state bowling title.
“This time I told the kids if you bowl like you did at the roll-offs (conference playoffs) you can take state, I know you can, but you need to be on and you need to have it in your head that you’re going to do this, and they did,” Marlys said.
“It’s still kind of unbelievable in my opinion (that we won state),” Bigalk said. “There are so many different players that are so good and somebody out of Rochester just comes up and we’re the best in the state, it’s kind of hard to believe but it’s a really good feeling.”
