(ABC 6 News) - For the first time in program history, the Rochester Lourdes Eagles softball team is heading to the state tournament after winning their first ever Section 1AA title.
A déjà vu match-up between the Eagles and Cotter/Hope Lutheran Ramblers for the section title. Almost a year ago to the day, these teams faced each other in the championship game, where the Ramblers came out on top and advanced to the state tournament.
Coming into this title game, Lourdes needed one win to advance, but the Ramblers brought their A-game and took game one, winning 2-0, to force game two.
The pace, energy and feel of game two was almost polar opposite of the first one. In the bottom of the first inning, the Eagles score three runs which held until the third inning when Karin Hayford drove in Katie Virgin. Eagles were up 4-0 after the third.
This score holds until the end and the Eagles are state-bound. Eagles' senior pitcher, Anna Taylor, threw a complete game shutout in game two and could not contain her excitement about her team's win.
"Honestly it's kind of a dream come true," Taylor said. "We've been thinking about this for the past three years, but this year I finally pushed through it and it feels awesome honestly."
Head coach Becky Macken was in awe, and tears, that after all these years, her team made history and will compete for a state title in just one week.
"[I'm] very excited, proud of these girls," Macken exclaimed. "We learned a lot from the past. Not to get uptight, just enjoy it more, and don't put so much pressure on ourselves. I give Cotter a lot of credit. Pat's got a good squad there and [Isabel] Northrop is a good pitcher. We did out homework and the girls they did it. It was awesome."
Next up, the Eagles will head to the state tournament which begins Thursday, June 6, at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
