(ABC 6 News)- The Rochester Lourdes girls hockey team is heading to state for the first time since 2006.
On Thursday night, the Eagles became section 1A champions when they took down the Faribault Falcons in Owatonna 7-1.
"Just overwhelmed emotions,” Lourdes Head Coach Jeff True said after his team’s victory. “I'm just very happy for these girls. They've worked so hard all season. We worked really hard all summer to get ready for this moment. We had these expectations coming into the season, we made it to this spot last year, we lost in the section championship, so we know how Faribault feels. They are a good team. That score does not reflect how close that game actually was. I'm confident going into the state tournament, but we need to play better if we want to beat some of the best teams in the state."
Abby Wick led the Eagles in scoring and even had a hat-trick.
"We knew this would just be another game for us and we had to work extra hard to reach our goals," Wick said.
Following Wick's lead was junior Allison Smith, who had two goals in Thursday's game.
Next up, Lourdes will head to the Class A state tournament in St. Paul at the Xcel Energy Center. They will begin tournament play on Wednesday. Now, the Eagles wait to see who they will face.
