(ABC 6 News) – The Lourdes Eagles girls hockey team owns the no.1 seed in the Section 1A playoffs, they have the Section 1A Coach of the Year, and a team loaded with talent.

One of their top players, junior forward Emma Schmitz, has committed to play women’s college hockey at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut in 2020.

According to Minnesota Girls’ Hockey Hub, including playoffs, Schmitz leads the Eagles with 29 assists and 54 points. Schmitz is second on the team in goals (25) and power play goals (5).

Schmitz is the fifth Eagles hockey player to make a college commitment since the summer—seniors Ali Ratzloff (College of St. Scholastica), Clara Billings (Gustavus Adolphus College), junior Allison Smith (Union College), and sophomore Maggie Hanzel (Boston University) all plan on playing college hockey.

Schmitz and the Eagles will play for the Section 1A championship in Owatonna on Thursday against Faribault. The Eagles haven’t reached the Class A state girls hockey tournament since the Eagles were a part of the Rochester Mayo Spartans program in 2006.
