(ABC 6 News) – It’s a new year, but the same end results in the section soccer playoffs for the Lourdes Eagles girls soccer team.
The Eagles defeated Byron in Thursday’s Section 1A girls soccer championship in Austin, 3-0, claiming their second-consecutive Section 1A championship win and clinching their second consecutive Class A state tournament berth.
"I've known many of these girls since they were in the 4th grade and watched them come up the ranks over the years," Lourdes head coach Sarah Groven said. "We haven't lost since the very first game of the season. I wanted this for them, I wanted this for our school. I'm proud of them."
Lourdes jumped ahead of Byron in the game’s opening minutes after McKenna Chestolowski’s header for a goal off of a corner kick put the Eagles ahead. That 1-0 score carried over to the second half, but Chestolowski proved to put the game out of reach with a line drive goal early in the second half.
"I just saw an opening right in the middle, and I have been waiting all year to take one of those," Chestolowski recalled. "I finally got the chance to strike it and finish."
Bella Talbot scored the final goal for the Eagles to put the cherry on top and ice the victory for the Eagles.
Lourdes will await their Class A state tournament fate, as it is still yet to be determined when and where they’ll open state tourney play.
