(ABC 6 News) – After erasing a two-goal deficit in the Section 1A boys' hockey championship, the Lourdes Eagles rally fell short against Minnesota River on Thursday night.
After jumping ahead two a 2-0 lead, the Eagles evened the score up in the first period with goals by Dustin Sorensen and Jared Anderson, tying the game at 2-2 after the first period.
The tie game held for most of the second period before the Bulldogs broke up the score with the go-ahead goal, and then added onto that lead with a goal in the third period.
Later in the third period, Lourdes was looking to rally once again, scoring a goal late in the third period to cut the deficit to one.
With less than a minute left in regulation though, a costly Lourdes penalty resulted in a Minnesota River power play. The Eagles pulled their goalie, and seconds after that, Bulldogs standout Hunter Wilmes scored an empty-net goal, his third goal of the night, to put the Bulldogs ahead by two goals and seal a Section 1A championship.
The loss marks the second consecutive Section 1A Title game loss for the Eagles--a tough pill to swallow for the entire Eagles program.
“This [senior] class means a lot to me, there's no doubt and this one's going to hurt,” Eagles co-head coach Joe Knoepke said after the game. “It shouldn't have ended like this for them, they've got too much talent. Definitely, the closest class I've had in my time so it's going to be a long night.”
With the win, the Bulldogs advance to the Minnesota Class A boys' hockey state tournament. "The Tourney" will begin next week at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
