(ABC 6 News) - UPDATE: The Austin Bruins raised a total of $24,680 during the 8th annual Paint the Rink Pink event on Saturday.
After more than eight hours of work and 1,200 gallons of water and paint, the ice rink at Riverside Arena transformed for the eighth annual "Paint the Rink Pink" fundraiser.
A crew from the Austin Street Department began the process of dying the rink around 7 a.m. Saturday, and by late morning the vibrant hue was already visible from around the arena.
Saturday night, the Austin Bruins faced off against the Minnesota Magicians to a full house, which Bruins media director Michael Keeley said shows the community's investment in the annual cancer research fundraiser.
"We have unbelievable support all year but this game, in particular, it seems like the whole town is here, so that's what makes it so special," he said.
In the past seven seasons, the event has raised more than $200,000 for cancer research at the Hormel Institute, and he hoped to raise another $40,000 this year.
Bruins beat the Magicians 5-1.
